As with many other Spinocerebellar Ataxia patients the progressive loss of basic motor functions, speech and balance came as a sudden shock. Simple tasks that were taken for granted were now daily obstacles. This was life for Alexandra Neumann until she found Beike Biotechnology and the adult stem cells they have provided for over 750 Spinocerebellar Ataxia patients.

Alexandra was diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 1 in 2013. Mood swings, loss of balance and slurred speech were the symptoms that ultimately led her to seeking medical help. While there is still great research into this condition, not much is known about the various Ataxia diagnoses. In Alexandra’s case it seems genetic since her mother also had this condition. With the lack of information comes a severe lack in treatment options for Ataxia leaving adult stem cell treatment as the most effective treatment option to date.

Improvements for Spinocerebellar Ataxia

Below is Alexandra’s stem cell treatment testimonial, a short documentary style video shot during her time in Bangkok, Thailand. While stem cell treatment is not a cure for spinocerebellar Ataxia, this video demonstrates the expected outcome for our spinocerebellar ataxia patients showing improvements in balance, speech, and motor function.

Since leaving Beike’s partner treatment facility in Bangkok, Alexandra has continued to see improvements. And is keeping with the physical and occupational therapy prescribed in her stem cell treatment program. Her walking has improved a lot, and she is feeling much less fatigued throughout the day. She stopped taking her medication during treatment and reports that she still doesn’t need it.

When asked what has been easier for her since returning home, she answered that “everything got easier. But in particular walking stairs.” Some days are still better than others however. It is vital that she continues her PT and OT and continues to support the stem cells by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

As Ataxia is a progressive condition we expect Alexandra will return for stem cell treatment in the future. Until that time we will continue to follow up through our Heath Evaluation Program and report any major changes she experiences.
