Dr Klein is an American ophthalmologist practicing in Florida. His work has led him into contact with several Optic Nerve Hypoplasia patients who have traveled to China for adult stem cell treatments. We asked him how he got involved with patients going outside the US for medical treatments, what dangers existed for patients making the trip and the limits he saw on the improvement possible. A car accident took Michelle from a bill of perfect health to blindness and paralysis. Her condition had normalized in the US around constant care. No options existed for her to improve her condition. In the past year Michelle has received two rounds of adult stem cell treatment in China and speaks with us here about the quantifiable physical improvements she's seen in her condition during that time and her personal response to the treatments' results. Spina BifidaSarah - Spina Bifida Stem Cell Patient
This interview was conducted in Portuguese and the video has English subtitles. Sarah traveled from Ecuador to China to receive transplants of adult stem cells. She has Spina Bifida, a condition which begins in the womb and leads to a malformation of the spinal cord along with other problems. Near the end of her treatment her mother recorded this interview for StemCellsChina about the improvements she's see in Sarah's condition and their hopes for the future.

From the StemCellsChina Vault comes a subtitled compilation of clips from Audrey Jones. Audrey was one of the first international patients to be treated at Qingdao's Chengyang People's Hospital. Audrey suffers from idiopathic ataxia and received umbilical cord blood stem cells to treat symptoms brought on by the disease.

In 2010 Claire Marsh of Australia returned to China for a second round of adult stem cell transplants to improve her condition following a boating accident. The accident left her with an incomplete spinal cord injury. In this video Claire talks about the results of her journey to China for stem cell treatments. She also talks about the specific improvements she saw in the year following her first therapy and the improvements she saw in the hospital during her second round.

AtaxiaReuben - Non-Hereditary Cerebellar Ataxia Stem Cell Patient
Reuben is six years old and suffers from a non-hereditary form of Cerebellar Ataxia. He has difficulty with basic motion. He is very unstable. This is all very challenging for a six year old to deal with. Reuben's family brought him to China to receive transplants of umbilical cord blood stem cells. In this video his mother discusses their decision to come for treatment and the experience they had living in the Chinese hospital for a month. Reuben regularly attended physical therapy prior to coming to China. So his parents were very surprised when his ability to stand and even walk improved remarkably. Check out the video to learn more.

ALZJustin - Alexander Disease Stem Cell Patient
Justin has a rare genetic disorder called Alexander Disease. Doctors have given his mother a grim prognosis all his life--telling her he would be dead by age 4, 8 and 10. He's still living. Alexander's Disease is a leukodystrophy affecting the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells. It is a neurodegenerative disorder typically fatal and has no cure. His mother, Sary, wants to provide him with the best quality of life possible in spite of the disease. Adult stem cell therapy offers that chance.

Lawrence is a percussionist. He's a high school student. Last year he came to China for adult stem cell therapy in the hopes of increasing his vision. While the results of stem cell therapy are typically seen in the months following treatment, Lawrence saw significant improvements early in his treatment. Spinal Muscular AtrophyNirma - SMA III Stem Cell Patient
Nirma traveled from Indonesia to China to receive transplants of umbilical cord blood stem cells--a form of adult stem cells--to treat symptoms associated with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type III. SMA III is caused by a rare genetic mutation. While the treatment she received is not a cure for SMA III it can offer progressive quality of life improvements for a patient.

Martin "Marty" Bentler has been living with some degree of Ataxia for the past 20 years. Sick and progressively getting worse, he found no interest in his doctors to improve his quality of life. They called when they had a new test. He just wanted to walk without dragging his feet so much.
